This is our second visit to Quebec's Iles-de-la-Madeleine, the islands in the Gulf of the St Lawrence ... a 5 hour ferry ride from Prince Edward Island. We were here In 2006 along with Sue and Jim Curtis. This time we have 6 full days to photograph (weather permitting).
Weather was to be of little importance today. We had 'done' our photography so if we did some more that mattered very little. What was important was getting some laundry done and seeing a couple boutiques/galleries.
The laundry was done for us at the Auberge. June thought that was great! We got to some galleries and left some money behind. That was OK too.
We also went back to the area (Bassin) where Tom had been unable to find the sea-stack he found so attractive in 2006. A search of old files on his computer convinced him that we had gone to the right place but needed to climb over a hill to see that favoured sea-stack. We did that ... and when he climbed the hill he realized the truth. The much smaller sea-stack we had photographed yesterday was really the remnant of the one he liked so much in 2006. Wind and waves, maybe ice too, had done their thing and the sea-stack was only about 30% of its size on '06. WOW! That's erosion! On the right are photos of the old and the new/revised/eroded/ sea-stack.
We also went back to a favourite coastline on the north coast of Cap aux Meules, near Fatima. Today's 45 kmh winds and a rising tide made the area we had already visited twice no place to be with a camera. Huge waves and pounding surf with salty spray were very convincing.
Tom made a few images on the 'back-up D70' and that was it! We show the same scene, differing coverage, on three different days this week. If you don't like the weather ... just wait a bit!
