Your Reunion Committee put forward the project of re-furbishing three Study Rooms in the Mills Memorial Library as out 'Gift to the University' at the time of our 55th Reunion. We felt it was inline with our continuing objective of 'helping students' and related well with our class as the library opened when we were students. The goal was to raise $15,000 before our 55th Reunion.
We had raised just under $12,000 at then end of 2007 thanks to the generosity of class members. We have achieved that $15,000 goal ... and the money has
been spent! Thank you all!
The 55th Reunion was like a meeting of old friends. Well, we are getting older and we are friends . Most of those attending had been at recent reunions but we welcomed Len Lugsdin as he and his wife Patricia joined us after many years.
Our Reception was in the Mills Library where we were very favourably impressed with the refurbished Study Rooms we funded. Jeff Treziak, the University Librarian thanked us ... and then made us very proud of the Mills Library with its recent recognition as the outstanding library of its kind in North America. Well done Mac!
Our photographs were taken in front of the Alumni Hall and then we enjoyed a very nice dinner ... steak/salmon and a delicious dessert table. Willard Pottinger said Grace and reminded us of those classmates we have lost. Bob Smith toasted the university. Jim Forrester was our MC and kept things in order. He introduced McMaster President Peter George who told us about Mac's goals for the future and accomplishments today. Karen McQuigge, who manages Alumni Development and has been a constant contact and support for the Class of '53 Committee spoke about our reunions and how they differ from recent Mac classes. We are certainly smaller!
Finally we selected a new Class of '53 Committee. Tom Yates told those in attendance that we expected to do very little for 4 years but would probably get a newsletter out each year and continue to encourage members to financially support McMaster. Those who are present and able will consider a 60th Reunion event.
Bob Smith has chosen not to continue on the Class of '53 Committee after 20 years of service. Thank you Bob. Keith Bain, Doug Mawson, Jim Forrester, Willard Pottinger and Tom Yates constitute the new committee ... called the Rump Committee by Tom.
